In a deeply tragic incident, two brave firefighters lost their lives and one was seriously injured in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Sunday, June 29, 2025. The firefighters were responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain when they were ambushed by a sniper.

According to authorities, the fire was intentionally set as a trap to lure in emergency responders. As the crew arrived to contain the blaze, a shooter opened fire, killing two firefighters on the spot. A third firefighter was rushed to the hospital and is now reported to be in stable condition after surgery.

Over 300 law enforcement officers, including SWAT teams and aerial support, were deployed to contain the situation. After hours of tense operations, the suspect was found dead near the scene with a firearm. Investigators are still working to determine whether the shooter died by suicide or during the confrontation.
